‘Will be a lovely project’: Gary Kirsten interested in England Test team coaching role

Gary Kirsten would be open to coach England’s Test team if Chris Silverwood is sacked following the team’s disastrous performance in the ongoing Ashes 2021-22 in Australia. The Joe Root-led Tourists have been ruled out of all departments with Australia thanks to a 3-0 lead in the series with two Tests remaining.

Silverwood has come under fire after the performance and in all likelihood could see himself being relieved of office. Interestingly, Silverwood took the role ahead of Kirsten when the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) conducted interviews to appoint Trevor Bayliss’s successor in 2019.

However, if the ECB agrees to split the role of coaching in the red and white-ball formats, Kirsten will be interested in playing the role.

“hear it [England coach job] Always considered because it’s a tremendous honour,” Kirsten said in an interview. “I’ve made this trip twice so far and I’ve always made it clear that I’m never committed to doing all formats . And when international cricket boards meet, their heads revolve around the fact that they need to split coaching roles, then it becomes a consideration.”

Kirsten has worked with the South African and Indian national teams in the past. However, he has been shying away from taking up a full-time role in the past citing family commitments but has worked with several T20 teams.

He said, ‘It is great to work with the Test team or work with the ODI team. Listen, England ODI team is ready, you are the best ODI team in the world right now. This is a project that has received a lot of thought. You’ve got consistency in the players you’ve picked.”

“Your Test team has struggled for a while, but it will be a really lovely project. I think it’s a great project for someone to come and take that Test team forward. A lot needs to be done to build this Test team.”
