New Delhi: Amid the rising number of monkeypox cases around the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday (May 30, 2022) that it does not believe the recent outbreak outside Africa will lead to a new pandemic. The global health body also said that it is not clear whether infected people who are not displaying symptoms can transmit the disease.
More than 300 suspected and confirmed cases of monkeypox – Usually a mild illness that is spread by close contact and can cause flu-like symptoms and pus-filled skin sores – so far in May has been reported in about 23 countries, mostly in Europe.
Asked whether this monkeypox outbreak has the potential to become a pandemic, Rosamund Lewis, technical chief for monkeypox from the WHO Health Emergency Program, said: “We don’t know but we don’t think so.”
“At the moment, we are not worried about a global pandemic,” she was quoted as saying by Reuters.
The WHO official said that once monkeypox has been contracted, the period of rash emergence and scabs falling off is recognized as an infectious period, but there is limited information about whether people who are not symptomatic The virus has been spread by.
“We don’t really know yet whether there is an asymptomatic transmission of monkeypox — the past has indicated this is not a major feature — but that remains to be determined,” she said.
WHO, meanwhile, is considering whether the outbreak should be assessed as a “potential public health emergency of international concern” or PHEIC. Such an announcement, as was made for COVID-19 and Ebola, would help accelerate research and funding to prevent the disease.
Monkeypox virus kills 9 in Congo; First death in Nigeria in 2022
Dr Aim Alongo, head of the Sankuru health division in Congo, said on Monday that the country has 465 confirmed cases of the disease, making it the worst-hit in West and Central Africa, where the disease is endemic.
Dr. Alongo said that this disease in Congo remains due to consumption of dead monkeys and rodents.
The Nigeria Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that in 2022 it has confirmed 21 of 66 suspected cases of the disease, which is usually endemic in Nigeria and other parts of West and Central Africa.
“The death was reported of a 40-year-old patient who had co-morbidities and was on immunosuppressive drugs,” the Nigeria CDC said.
Nigeria has not had an outbreak of monkeypox since September 2017, but it continues to report sporadic cases. The Agency for Disease Control said 22 of its 36 states have at least 247 confirmed cases, with a 3.6% death rate.
What is monkeypox virus?
Monkeypox is a rare viral infection similar to human smallpox. It was first discovered in 1958 in monkeys kept for research and in 1970 the first human case of monkeypox was reported. The disease mainly occurs in tropical rainforest regions of Central and West Africa.
Monkeypox usually presents itself with fever, rash and swollen lymph nodes and can lead to a variety of medical complications. The disease is usually self-limiting with symptoms lasting two to four weeks. Serious cases can also happen. In recent times, the case fatality ratio has reportedly been around 3-6 per cent, but could be as high as 10 per cent. No deaths are reported in this current spread.
How does the monkeypox virus spread?
Monkeypox is spread to humans through close contact with an infected person or animal, or through material contaminated with the virus. It is reportedly spread by rodents such as rats, mice and squirrels.
Monkeypox disease is spread through wounds, body fluids, respiratory droplets and contaminants such as bedding.
However, the virus is said to be less contagious than smallpox and cause less severe illness.
How are cases of monkeypox treated?
Vaccines used during the smallpox eradication program also provided protection against monkeypox. New vaccines have been developed, one of which has been approved for disease prevention. According to the WHO, an antiviral agent developed to treat smallpox has also been licensed to treat monkeypox.
