Akshay Kumar and Manushi Chhillar’s upcoming film Prithviraj is all set to delay its release due to the spike in Covid-19 cases in India.

Akshay Kumar had given hope to Bollywood with Sooryavanshi, which released in November last year. Not only did it become the first major film to hit the theatres, but also recorded the highest opening box office collection in two years as cinemas across the country reopened after a grim second Covid-19 wave in India. However, looks like the actor will now have to wait till his next big release Prithviraj hits the screens. If the latest reports are to be known, Yash Raj Films has decided to delay the release of the film due to the rise in Covid-19 cases.
Prithviraj stars Akshay Kumar in the lead role while Manushi Chillar is with him. The film marks the debut of the Miss World 2017 winner. It was scheduled to release at the end of this month. While Akshay and YRF are yet to make an announcement, a report suggests that the production house has decided to delay the release and the announcement may happen soon.
“When you have a sure shot blockbuster that will appeal to audiences across the country, you cannot gamble with such a huge product. Prithviraj will help massively in bringing people back to the theaters and it cannot be released at a time when it will not serve the purpose. Business-wise too, there is no point in compromising on a film that does well at the box office. It is a no-brainer to postpone the film and assess the Omicron and COVID-19 scenario before taking a call on the next release date of the film,” a trade source told Bollywood Hungama.
The insider also added that the production house was waiting to see if the situation improves in the country before taking a decision. However, the spike in cases prompted the banner to push the release of the film. “Everyone is looking forward to take Prithviraj by storm at the box office and set some new milestones in the post-pandemic era and YRF is committed to this belief. They will pull out the project when it can set the box office on fire.”
Last December, just three days before its release, the makers of Jersey also announced that they were delaying the film’s release. Shahid Kapoor had issued a statement on the same day that the Delhi government announced the closure of cinema halls due to the rise in cases in the capital.
