The cause of the fire is not clear yet.
Wildfires are common in Sardinia’s dry Mediterranean climate in summer, with particularly hot southwesterly winds blowing on days when temperatures reach 104 degrees Fahrenheit, as has happened in the past few days.
“These are extraordinary fires for magnitude, but also common for weather and speed,” said Gianfilippo Misillo, head of the Italian firefighters’ department of forest fire coordination. “These fires create their own microclimate and spread very quickly.”
Mr Misillo said Italy was experiencing an increase in wildfires this year, as is the case every four or five years, when low bushfires in uninhabited areas and bushfires increase so much that either accidentally or intentionally, They become fuel to spark human activity.
Firefighters said Italy had recorded about 13,000 more wildfires than last year, mostly in the southern regions of Apulia, Calabria and Sicily.
