CBI accused Sandip Ghosh of granting the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital’s contracts to his close one, violating the rules
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is investigating the rape and murder of a doctor and alleged financial irregularities at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, told a special court that the ex-principal of the college, Dr Sandip Ghosh, corrupted the process for the recruitment of medical house staff at the hospital and made appointments without following the norms.
The central agency further accused him of granting the hospital’s contracts to his close one, violating the rules. The CBI made the abovementioned submissions before the special court in Alipore on September 3.
News18 accessed the remand copy of CBI which has made certain revelations.
The preliminary scrutiny has made the agency add Section 120 B, 420, 467,409 in the FIR. It also mentioned that raids were carried out on August 25 and various documents were recovered which hints nexus of Sandip Ghosh with co-accused.
Sandip Ghosh Corrupted Appointments: CBI
CBI claimed that Sandip Ghosh knew Biplab Singh and Suman Hazra (Main vendors) of RG Kar from the time he was posted as HOD of Murshidabad college. Ghosh helped Biplab to get the tender. In fact, after Murshidabad wherever Ghosh was appointed, Biplab used to get tenders at his college. Suman, another vendor known to Biplab Singh, was also a part of this nexus.
It was also mentioned that the investigation revealed that Biplab Singh, owner of Ma Tara traders, owned several companies in his name and his family members’ names and used to participate in tenders under various names. The CBI also told the court that the way Sandip Ghosh used to award tender to Biplab Singh was not transparent.
The CBI also mentioned SK Afsar Ali, the personal assistant of Sandip Ghosh and alleged that he used to handle various activities of Ghosh. His wife Nargis Khanum got the contract of a cafe in RG Kar, named as Eshan Cafe which was inside the campus.
Sandip Ghosh used to appoint house staff without adopting any transparent method. In 2022 and 2023, signatures of committee members were absent in the appointment of house staff.
During the investigation, it came to light that Dr Ghosh was involved in the siphoning of funds by managing tenders. It was also revealed that he used to divert academic funds to his close aide contractors.
Sandip Ghosh Under Radar
After Sandip Ghosh took over as the RG Kar principal, he was transferred to a medical college in Murshidabad in September 2023. He returned to RG Kar Medical College within a month and continued until the August 9 incident of rape and murder. He then resigned on August 12 following the outrage over the trainee doctor’s rape and murder.
Notably, the ex-principal of the RG Kar College came under the radar of the agency after he was immediately posted at the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital following his resignation. However, a day after his appointment, the Calcutta High Court on the next day stepped in and made him go on leave. He was later suspended after CBI arrested him.
