Why Team India Decided to Release Shubman Gill, Avesh Khan – News18

India have just one-day gaps between their Super 8 games and the team management didn’t feel the need to have a jumbo squad as there is little scope for extensive net sessions.

Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan are spending the last few hours with the Indian cricket team in Florida as both are set to be relieved from the squad. As earlier reported by CricketNext, they will not travel to the West Indies for the Super 8 stage of the ongoing T20 World Cup and it’s understood that the change in plan was due to the schedule of the Super 8.

As per the original plan, both of them were supposed to travel with the side for the complete tournament but the management now didn’t feel the need to carry the squad of 19 – 15 in squad and four travelling reserves.

India are scheduled to play Super 8 matches on June 20, 22, and 24, and will be playing the second semi-final on June 27 if they qualify.

“There was very little gap between games for any extensive practice. So it was decided by the management to release the two players as matches are literally back to back and there is very little scope for marathon practice sessions to happen. Khaleel is already there to ensure the left-arm variety in nets if needed,” says a source privy to developments.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made travel arrangements for Gill and Avesh, and they are unlikely to travel to the ground for India’s last group-stage game vs Canada on June 15. Only the squad of 15 is allowed to be in the dugout/change room. Even in the game vs Pakistan in New York, Khaleel Ahmed, Avesh and Rinku Singh were cheering for the side from the stands.

Florida forecast

There has been consistent rain in the region and the forecast is not looking good for today as well. While the USA-Ireland game was washed out on June 14, Team India too had no option but to stay indoors and some players opted for a gym session in the team hotel.

Having won their first three games, India are already through to the Super 8s and the chances of them getting game time before leaving for West Indies look very bleak at the moment.

India are set to fly to Barbados on June 16 via a charter in all likelihood and they will later move to Antigua and St Lucia for their next two games.
