There is welcome news for the entertainment industry after nearly 2 years of revenue slump due to Covid-19, with cinemas across the country witnessing a surge in viewership. This is mostly due to the grand opening of Tamil superstar Ajith’s new film Valimai.
The film has earned more than Rs 159.75 crore in just four days. Valimai is directed by H. Vinoth and has been released in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. The action packed film has emerged as a blockbuster in Tamil Nadu and is being well received by the audience in various states.
Valimai has the highest opening collection for a Tamil film in Pandemic.
The film stars Tamil superstars Ajith Kumar and Huma Qureshi in lead roles and is produced by Boney Kapoor in association with Zee Studios under the banner of Bayview Projects LLP.
Valimai’s opening collection was the highest for any Tamil film in the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
Another recently released film, Bheemala Nayak, starring Telugu actor Pawan Kalyan, has raked in over Rs 150 crore at the box office.
Earlier this year, the Omicron-led Covid-19 wave forced the makers to delay the release of several big budget films including SS Rajamouli’s RRR, Valimai, Gangubai Kathiawadi.
According to Nitin Sood, CFO, PVR Cinemas, the box office collections are expected to improve further with the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions across the country. “Audiences are coming back to theaters in a big way, so it’s good news for cinema,” he told CNBC TV18 in an interview.
According to Sood, the theater industry is witnessing strong growth in ticketing as well as the food and beverage segment and with the lifting of all COVID-19 related restrictions, March should be a great month for the cinema industry.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi which stars Alia Bhatt in the lead role has also seen a bumper opening at the box office and has raked in around Rs 40 crore since its release.
Nitin Sood further added that the audience is now excited to visit the theaters and the upcoming big budget films will further increase the revenue of the industry.
