Jeffrey Vandersay was on fire for Sri Lanka in the 2nd ODI against India on Sunday (August 4), which was played at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The right-arm legbreak bowler picked up six wickets for 33 runs in his quota of 10 overs to register his best bowling figures in international cricket and help Sri Lanka successfully defend the total of 240 runs by dismissing India for 208 runs in 42.2 overs.
Vandersay opened his account in the second ODI by removing Indian skipper Rohit Sharma on the third ball of the 14th over. The 37-year-old right-handed batter, who was caught by Pathum Nissanka, top-scored for the world No. 1 team by amassing a total of 64 runs from 44 balls. During his stay at the crease, he hammered five fours and four sixes.
After Rohit’s wicket, Vandersay dismissed Shubman Gill (35), Shivam Dube (0), Virat Kohli (14), Shreyas Iyer (7), and KL Rahul (0). In fact, the first six wickets of India’s innings were all taken by him.
For his super show in the second ODI, Vandersay won the Player of the Match award. The six-wicket show at R. Premadasa Stadium on Sunday also helped Vandersay become the fifth Sri Lankan bowler after Muttiah Muralithran, Ajantha Mendis, Angelo Matthews, and Akila Dananjaya to take six or more wickets in an ODI match against India. His figure of 6 for 33 is the fifth-best bowling show in an India-Sri Lanka ODI match.
