Maggie Smith’s sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens followed her path into the world of acting.

Maggie Smith, famous for her portrayal of Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter series, died on Friday, September 27, at the age of 89. From the magical halls of Hogwarts to the intricate drama of Downton Abbey, Maggie’s career spanning over seven decades was iconic. But behind her popularity and stardom, Maggie was a doting mother. Before she became an international sensation, she was raising her two sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens, with her former husband, Robert Stephens.

These two boys, who inherited their parents’ acting genes, grew into talented actors in their own right. Let’s take a closer look at Maggie Smith’s sons and how they’ve carried forward their family’s acting legacy.

Chris Larkin (Christopher Stephens)

Chris Larkin, born on June 19, 1967, is the eldest of Maggie Smith’s children. Like his parents, Chris pursued a career in acting but chose to drop his famous last name, Stephens, to step out of his father’s shadow and create his own identity. He explained this decision in a 2013 interview with The Times, saying he never intended to go back to his original surname.

Though Chris sought to carve his own path, he has always acknowledged the deep influence his parents had on his career. He is most known for his role as Richard Brown in Outlander.

Today, Chris lives in London with his wife, Suki whom he married in 2005 and their two children, reports People.

Toby Stephens

Born on April 21, 1969, Toby Stephens is the younger of the two sons. After graduating from the London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art in 1991, Toby dove headfirst into acting.

His breakout role came in 1994 when he starred as the title character in Coriolanus with the Royal Shakespeare Company. He then became widely recognised with his portrayal of Bond villain Gustav Graves in Die Another Day, making him the youngest actor to ever take on that role.

In 2018, Toby joined the cast of Netflix’s Lost in Space, where he portrayed John Robinson until the show wrapped up in 2021.

Toby Stephens got married to Anna-Louise Plowman in 2001. Together, the couple had three children, Elijah, Tallulah and Kura Stephens.
