WHO: 4 million new cases of corona virus have been reported globally

More than 4 million new COVID-19 cases were reported globally last week, mostly driven by spikes in the Middle East and Asia. This is according to the World Health Organization’s latest weekly report on the pandemic.

The United Nations health agency said on Wednesday that infections have been rising for more than a month, although the number of deaths worldwide has fallen by about 8%.

In the Middle East and Asia, however, deaths increased by more than a third. In the last week, the US, India, Indonesia, Brazil and Iran had the highest number of corona virus cases. More than 130 countries have now reported cases of the easily spread delta variant, which was first identified in India.

After nearly a month of rising cases, the WHO said the European region recorded a 9% drop in COVID-19 infections, citing falling caseloads in Britain and Spain. Last month, the UK eased almost all remaining COVID-19 restrictions amid heavy criticism the move would lead to another deadly wave of infections. About 60% of the British population is fully immune to the disease.
