When work is the key to worship: Karnataka priest is a government employee, math runs on his salary

For this Karnataka Math, the priest is running the place, literally.

Veerabhadra Shivacharya Swami, head of Hiremutta in Lingadahalli village of Haveri district, is an employee of the Hubli Electricity Supply Company. He has been working as Senior Supervisor since 1986. In between, he was promoted to the post of Assistant Executive Engineer, but he turned it down.

Swami took sannyas in his childhood, but he did not stop his education. He has a Diploma in Electrical Engineering from which he got this job. Veerasomeswara Jagadguru of Rambhapuri Math in Balehonnur made him the head of this Math in 1998.

“After getting this position, I wanted to quit my job in HESCOM. But my companions and the saint of Rambhapuri Math prevented me from resigning. This monastery had no money then. Although it has a history of 1,000 years, the monastery does not have any property. My salary was necessary to run the monastery. We now run a Dashoha (free food programme) and a school, the money for which comes from my salary,” Swamy said.

SC Belakeri, HESCOM assistant executive engineer of Ranibennur sub-division, said the swami never sought any relaxation citing his position in the matha.

People of Lingadahalli say that he is always available to them after shifting to HESCOM.
