However, did you know that Twinkle Khanna didn’t say ‘yes’ immediately? Instead, she put a strange condition to marry Akshay. At that time, she was shooting for the film Mela starring Aamir Khan and Faisal Khan.
Twinkle, who was giving consecutive flops at that time, told Akshay that if Mela was liked by the audience, she would not get married. But, if it flops, she will tie the knot with him.
Akshay agreed and as luck would have it, Mela failed at the box office, much to the dismay of Aamir Khan and director Dharmesh Darshan. According to media reports, the fair was made in a budget of Rs 18 crore and could earn only Rs 25 crore. Although the film later attained cult status following several television broadcasts, it flopped upon release. Thus, Twinkle had to keep her word and the very next year she tied the knot with Akshay Kumar.
In Koffee With Karan, Akshay even said that he will be forever grateful to Aamir for making a flop film like Mela, after which he can marry his girlfriend. Mela also marked the last film in Twinkle’s career, as she quit acting after her marriage.
