Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez are getting divorced. JLo filed for the divorce on their 2nd wedding anniversary and brought back memories of their 2004 split.
It feels like Deja Vu as Jennifer Lopez filed for a divorce from Ben Affleck. The singer, who has been married to the former Batman star for two years, submitted her divorce documents on the couple’s second wedding anniversary. Although it broke fans who were rooting for Bennifer, it brings back memories of the first time they broke up, back in 2004.
For the unversed, Jennifer and Ben started dating in 2002, when they were shooting for their film Gilgi. They were going strong, with even proposing to her. Ben had proposed to her with a 6.1-carat pink diamond ring, which reportedly was priced at $1.2 million. However, in 2004, Jennifer called off the engagement and the impending marriage. Her team at the time confirmed the break up while Ben’s team refused to comment.
“Jennifer Lopez has ended her engagement to Ben Affleck. At this difficult time, we ask that you respect her privacy,” her team said in 2004, as reported by People. Meanwhile, Ben’s team told New York’s Daily News, “I am not going to confirm anything about his personal life. We don’t want to get dragged into quicksand. Everybody wants a war. It’s not happening from our side.”
In 2014, she spoke up about him what seemed to be the first time and said that the Bennifer split was her first ‘big heartbreak.’ Speaking with Today, she said, “It was probably my first big heartbreak, and to have one of my best friends who I’d known for years who I actually love and did have chemistry with come into my life and say, ‘I’m here.’ What you need to know is, nobody can save you or heal you. Only you can do that for you.”
Two years later, in 2016, she spoke with People and said that there was genuine love there. “I think different time different thing, who knows what could’ve happened, but there was a genuine love there,” she said. “We didn’t try to have a public relationship. We just happened to be together at the birth of the tabloids, and it was like, ‘Oh my God.’ It was just a lot of pressure,” she added.
Today, several sources close the couple have spoken about events that led up to their divorce. However, Jennifer and Ben are yet to address the reports and claims.
