Dimple Kapadia was just 15 when she married Rajesh Khanna, who was nearly twice her age. Their marriage, lasting almost nine years, was far from blissful, with Dimple calling it “traumatic” in a past interview. After their split, Dimple made a movie comeback and considered remarrying.

In a 1994 chat with Pritish Nandy, Dimple discussed her views on marriage’s future. Despite being separated from Rajesh, she had said that it would be “unfortunate” if the marriage didn’t survive, calling it “important.” When asked if she still believed in marriage, Dimple simply said, “I do.”

When asked if she would consider remarrying, Dimple said she would, despite being used to her independence. “Yes, I would. I don’t know how I’d be able to adjust because I am so used to being my own person, but sure, I would love to get married again,” she had said.

On why she thought the marriage failed, Dimple said, “I think we were two very different kinds of people. And I was probably very young to understand what was happening to this man who was a superstar. I mean I have never been able to understand stars and their behavior pattern at all because I am not one myself. It’s very difficult for me to… I couldn’t understand it. I just couldn’t understand it.”

Dimple Kapadia and Rajesh Khanna were Bollywood’s ‘it’ couple, tying the knot in 1973 when Dimple was just 15 and Khanna was a seasoned star. Their marriage, which started with a bang, soon hit rough patches. Despite their early successes, including Dimple’s breakout role in Bobby and Khanna’s string of hits, their relationship soured, leading to a dramatic separation in 1982. Though they never officially divorced, their split was a major media spectacle. Dimple went on to shine in films, while Khanna remained a Bollywood icon until his death in 2012.
