WhatsApp tests ‘secure’ backup of messages for these users – Times of India

WhatsApp Currently offers end-to-end encryption for the messages shared on its platform. The Facebook-owned instant messaging platform was previously reported to encrypt chat backups in the cloud. According to a report by WaBetaInfo, this feature is available in the latest beta version of WhatsApp.
WhatsApp has rolled out Android Beta version for 2.21.15.5 which brings end-to-end encrypted backup. Enabling the feature will allow users to keep chat history and media backup safe from unauthorized access.
How does encryption work?
The user must choose a password that will be used to encrypt future backups. The password will be required when you restore a backup. It can contain numeric digits and lowercase letters between ‘a’ and ‘f’.
However, the feature will have a caveat. If a user forgets the password or loses the 64 digit recovery key, it will be permanently locked. In such a situation, even WhatsApp cannot help in coming in.
The report by WaBetaInfo states that the password will be private and will not be shared with WhatsApp, Facebook, Google or Apple.
As mentioned above, this feature is currently available for WhatsApp beta Android users. Interested people can enroll in the beta testing group to try out this new feature. Otherwise, one can wait for this feature to become available to all.
Meanwhile, the social messaging platform has rolled out multi-device support feature. It is now live as an opt-in beta program and allows one to use their phone and up to four other non-phone devices simultaneously. This feature will enable WhatsApp to be used on other devices even when the phone’s battery is drained. To link the device, WhatsApp users will have to scan a QR code from their phone. “This process now requires biometric authentication before linking where people have enabled this feature on compatible devices,” WhatsApp said in a statement.
