Advantages of both image and video compressors would include shorter send times and download times as well as less storage.

WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will allow users to change the image quality setting before sending it to others. As spotted by popular WhatsApp update tracker WABetaInfo, the new Image Compressor tool will offer three options of ‘Save Data’, ‘Best Quality’ and ‘Auto’. The new WhatsApp tool, traces of which were found on WhatsApp beta for Android 2.21.14.16, is still under development, and the stable rollout may take months. Recently, the Facebook-owned messaging platform was seen working on a similar feature where users could compress the quality of the video before sending it. Advantages of both image and video compressors would include shorter send times and download times as well as lower storage consumption.

However, it can also cause a drop in the overall quality of the image, which means it may appear more grainy or blurry. The publication notes that the Auto Compressor option will allow WhatsApp To find out the best compression algorithm for specific images. Best quality, as the term indicates, would mean no tampering with quality. On the other hand, data saver compression is enabled when the data saver mode is activated in the smartphone’s settings. Currently, the maximum file size allowed on WhatsApp for all media – be it photos, videos or voice messages – is 16 MB on all platforms.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp started to roll A new View Once tool on WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.21.14.3 last month. This feature essentially lets users send media files that will automatically disappear as soon as the receiver views them. To check availability, Android testers need to open a chat, add a media file such as a video or photo, and look for the circular icon with a ‘1’ to the right of the caption bar. WhatsApp’s View Once feature appears to be inspired by Snapchat that allows users to send snaps that can only be viewed once.
