WhatsApp Quashes Data Breach Concerns, Says No Evidence Of Any Leak

WhatsApp has responded to reports of an alleged data breach on the platform. WhatsApp says there is no evidence the messaging app leaked data, and even says the unproven screenshots don’t make a strong case for otherwise.

“The claim written on CyberNews is based on baseless screenshots. There is no evidence of ‘data leak’ from WhatsApp,” said a WhatsApp spokesperson on Monday.

In fact, this has been confirmed by CyberNews’ reporter on the WhatsApp data breach. CyberNews editor-in-chief Jürgita Lapiennette said in her report that there is no evidence that WhatsApp was hacked. She further adds that the leaking of phone numbers could be a scourge.

A few days back a report claimed that data of over 500 million WhatsApp users from different countries was put up for sale on hacker forums. Since WhatsApp works using a phone number, it was alleged that there could have been a leak in the messaging data that exposed the data.

The report mentions that the actual data includes 487 million WhatsApp users, which is by no means a low figure. These users belong to 84 countries, and the list includes prominent names like US, UK, Italy, Egypt, and some users India Too.

The hacker had also put different price tags on the user data depending on the countries. The report states that the US data is available for around $7000 (roughly Rs. 5,61,800), the price tag for the UK is $2000 (roughly Rs. 1,61,800) and those in Germany for $2,500 (roughly Rs. 2,04,100) .

Even though WhatsApp has dismissed concerns about the alleged leak, it is still important that people be careful about accepting or replying to messages from unknown numbers. Because spammers can easily reach these victims and take advantage of their exposed mobile numbers in various ways.
