What the Election Results Would Have Looked Like Had the MCD Never Been Merged | Explained in Maps

The Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party on Wednesday secured the maximum possible control in Delhi, winning 134 of the total 250 wards in Delhi’s first-ever Integrated Municipal Corporation (MCD) elections, ousting the BJP from power. . The saffron party won 104 seats, while the Congress won nine and three wards as independents.

Wednesday’s mcd election results Drastic change in civic map of Delhi after 15 years of BJP rule where same party rules both MCD and Delhi government. But how would Tally find out AAP And the BJP was unable to integrate the MCD earlier this year? News18 did the math.

what if…

Had the MCD still been three bodies instead of one, the latest seat tally would have looked something like this:

Old East Delhi Municipal Corporation (61 Wards)

AAP: 20

BJP: 35

INC: 5

Industries: 1

Old North Delhi Municipal Corporation (94 Wards)

AAP: 56

BJP: 36

INC: 1

Industries: 1

Old South Delhi Municipal Corporation (95 Wards)

AAP: 58

BJP: 33

INC: 3

Industries: 1

The above ward distribution is as per the latest delimitation exercise. The total number of wards in the old corporations was 272, which has now come down to 250. Earlier there were 104 wards in North Delhi, 104 in South Delhi and 64 in East Delhi. So in theory, if the delimitation had not happened, the BJP would have won one corporation and the AAP two.

integration

Integrated Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) formally came into existence on 22 May after 10 years during the tenure of Sheila Dikshit. It was integrated again this year by merging three civic bodies – North, South and East Municipal Corporations – through the Delhi Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Act, 2022.

The bill to unify the three civic bodies was approved by the Lok Sabha on March 30 and the Rajya Sabha on April 5. The Bill became an Act after President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent on 18 April.

The Act reduced the number of wards in the national capital from the existing 272 to 250, which meant that the MCD had to undergo a delimitation exercise before elections.
