A landmark judgment was delivered in India on September 6, 2018, as a five-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court decriminalized homosexuality by nullifying the 157-year-old colonial-era provisions of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The history of the flag dates back to 1978 when San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker designed the first rainbow flag. Inspired by the rainbow as a natural flag from the sky, Baker chose eight colors for the flag’s stripes. Each color in the flag had its own meaning (hot pink for sensuality, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for art, indigo for harmony, and blue for spirit. for purple).
Due to production issues, the indigo was replaced with the original blue, with the turquoise and pink stripes removed. Changes in design led to the contemporary six-striped flag with a red stripe at the top, followed by orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. An early version of the rainbow flag was flown for the first time in San Francisco on June 25, on Gay Independence Day. Baker designed the flag at the behest of a local activist to give an identity to the gay society. Baker died in 2017 at the age of 65. He was an openly gay man and a drag queen. By the 1990s, the rainbow flag had really become a symbol of the LGBT community around the world.
