Western United upset defending champions Melbourne City to win A-League title

Western United beat defending champions Melbourne City 2-0 to win the A-League Grand Final on Saturday and win a silver medal in only their third season as a professional club.

Melbourne-based United only joined the league as an expansion club in the 2019–20 campaign and were in their first decider.

But instead of panicking against more experienced opponents, he quickly took charge at AAMI Park, going 1-0 up within two minutes thanks to his own goal from Nuno Reus.

Serbian striker Aleksandra Prijovic finished second at the half-hour mark before he took a gritty action as City continued to attack in the final 45 minutes.

The last team to win the final in their first appearance was the Brisbane Roars 11 years ago.

The defeat was disappointing for City, who finished the regular season in first place and were viewed as the favorites at their home ground with 22,495 fans at the stadium.

They wanted to emulate sister club Manchester City and win one title after another.

Formerly Melbourne Heart, they were acquired by City Football Group – which owns Pep Guardiola’s Premier League title winners – in 2014 and have become benchmarks in recent seasons after years of struggle.

But they were under the gun from the start, conceding a corner in the second minute and under pressure from a high ball from Ben Garruccio, Reece headed for his own goal.

It was the fastest goal ever in a Grand Final and United kept up the pressure as Rattle City struggled to settle down and pose any threat.

United, coached by former Socceroo John Aloisie, were quicker and faster and continued to put up the pressure with City’s Curtis Good before Prijovic doubled the lead minutes.

But it needed a VAR decision, with the Serb initially flagging only referee Chris Beeth’s decision to overturn, which replays showed was correct.

City were on fire in the second half and Matthew Leckie jiggled the crossbar shortly after the restart, then Andrew Knabbout moved closer as he started asking questions.

But United’s defense remained steadfast under waves of attacks with goalkeeper Jamie Young making brilliant saves from Nababout and Scott Galloway to ensure he scored the biggest win in his short life.
