first T20I report

St George’s, Grenada: Evin Lewis hit 71 off 22 balls, including a half-century, as West Indies handed an eight-wicket win over South Africa in the first of five Twenty20s on Saturday.

South Africa fell short of an equal total when they were restricted to 160-6 in their 20 overs after being sent off.

Lewis scored 71 runs in just 35 balls and shared 85 for the first wicket with Andre Fletcher and 39 for the second wicket with Chris Gayle to help West Indies win. When he was dismissed in the 12th over, West Indies were in sight of a 124-2 victory.

Gayle and Andre Russell shared an unbroken 37-run stand for the third wicket to take West Indies past South Africa’s total in just 15 overs. Gayle was dismissed for 34 not out in 24 balls and Russell scored 23 runs in 12 balls.

West Indies’ innings included 15 sixes, seven of which were hit by Lewis.

I was confident and backed up to my potential today, Lewis said. This wicket is great to bat on, it needs to be capitalized.

We thought they were 30 or 40 runs short because these were great conditions. Andre Fletcher and I tried to get off to a good start in the power play, most importantly, and then try and build from there to get the win.

Saturday’s match, the first to be played at St George’s, Guyana, was the first match between West Indies and South Africa since the 2016 Cricket World Cup, which was won by the West Indies. But West Indies have won only two out of their last seven T20I series.

South Africa got off to a strong start led by in-form Quinton de Kock, who scored 37 runs in 24 balls. It was 95-2 in the 11th over, which was set for a competitive score. But, although Rassie van der Dussen scored 56 off 38 balls in the final part of the innings, the innings lost its momentum.

Fabian Allen bowled early and scored 2-18 runs in four overs and Dwayne Bravo suppressed any late rally in the 19th over with two wickets in successive deliveries.

Lewis and Fletcher got West Indies off to a good start and scored 85 runs in just seven overs. Fletcher looked strong as he was run out for a bye, which was beaten by Lungi Ngidis with a straight hit at the non-striker’s end.

Proteas captain Temba Bavuma rotated his bowlers but could not interrupt West Indies’ scoring.

In the absence of Aiden Markram, left-armer George Linde, who opened the bowling, and wrist spinner Tabrez Shamsi, Bavuma lacked extra-slow options. He was forced to call part-timer Reeza Hendrix, who had not bowled in a T20 International before.

Hendricks was introduced in the 11th over, when West Indies were at 93-1 and faced the daunting prospect of bowling Chris Gayle. The West Indies master blaster hit a six off his first two balls and scored 21 runs in his only over.
