The West Bengal government on Thursday launched an online portal to streamline admissions to undergraduate courses. Talking to reporters, education Minister Bratya Basu after a meeting with Vice Chancellors (VCs) of state universities said that a candidate can now apply for admission on the basis of marks obtained in higher secondary or other plus-two-level board examinations.

A student can also specify the college of his choice in the application, and the request will be considered, the minister explained. Asked whether universities would conduct online exams this time, considering that a section of students had been agitating for it for a long time, Basu said, “We will leave the decision to the institutions concerned. They have autonomy. We will not interfere.”

“The department will soon talk to the college authorities on the issue,” he said. Basu said the state government was in favor of holding elections to the student unions of colleges, something that had been hanging for over three years partly due to COVID-19.
One of the vice-chancellors who attended the meeting later said that he and his counterparts in other universities “informed the minister of our readiness to implement the new system for admission to UG courses”. “We will confirm the decision at our executive body meeting by this week,” he said.
