Talking to reporters, BJP spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya said that the state government should have built a dam in view of the devastation caused by the Yes cyclone. “If there is heavy rain, the water level will rise. But the TMC government did not do the work of building dams and removing existing dams. It didn’t take care of them. After destroying several dams in the districts of South Bengal, the state government should have learned a lesson from it,” Bhattacharya said.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi claiming that the state is facing “severe man-made flood situation” in some districts due to release of water from DVC dams in Panchet, Maithon and Tenughat.

To that, Bhattacharya pointed out that the state government changed irrigation ministers several times in the last ten years, resulting in no serious work to ensure the maintenance of the dams.

“What was the state’s irrigation department doing for the last 10 years? So many ministers were changed. The state government is blaming the Center to save its face. It is pointing fingers at the central government for hiding its failure in development works in the state,” the BJP leader said.
