West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) will soon introduce Data Science and Artificial Intelligence courses in its curriculum. The official notification of the board states that these two courses will be started in class 11th and 12th. The two new academic courses will be offered as electives under Set 1 of the Higher Secondary curriculum and students can opt for only one subject at a time.

As per the guidelines of the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education, students with a vocational subject as an optional subject are not allowed to opt for Data Science or Artificial Intelligence. Schools affiliated to WBCHSE can apply to the council from May 2 to June 30, 2023. It is necessary to submit applications to educational institutions to allow them to start courses in the school. West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education will arrange about 10 days training program for teachers in the month of June or July.

Council chairman Chiranjib Bhattacharjee said that schools can also invite guest teachers from nearby universities if needed. The notification states, “Application for permission of the subject for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence should be submitted by hand in the academic session of Vidyasagar Bhavan for this year (i.e. academic year 2023-24 only”). Some of the criteria are, What a school needs to clarify before they start Data Science or Artificial Intelligence courses.

Computer Science is already being taught in the school and a proper laboratory facility is available. Following are the qualifications that have to be fulfilled:

Permanent approved teacher with minimum qualification of B.Sc in Computer Science/IT or BE/B.Tech in Computer Science/IT or MCA or Hons.

School teachers should have a graduation in Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics with a course in AI or Data Science.

The teachers in the school should have studied AI, Machine Learning either as part of undergraduate or postgraduate course or as part of postgraduate certificate course on AI-ML, Data Science from a reputed institute.

– Teachers should be familiar with the basic Python programming language.

Council chairman Chiranjib Bhattacharjee spoke to local media and said, “The council expects that around 100 schools across the state will be able to introduce these two new subjects. However, an official understanding of how many schools will actually apply is yet to come.” I’ll find out.”
