Kolkata: Bengal BJP One can pack their candidate list with some known faces to impress voters and try to regain some of their lost ground in the city in the municipal elections. BJP Rajya Sabha member Roopa Ganguly and east MLA Baishali Dalmiya Some names are doing the rounds.
The plan B of the party is also ready. Fearing “Trinamool domination” in civic polls, BJP leaders in Bengal want to take the issue to the highest judicial level, as was the case in the 2018 rural elections. Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar plans to take separate municipal elections in Kolkata to the Supreme Court, though the matter is pending in the High Court.
“We will contest elections in all 144 wards. We have about 5,000 applications now. A list will be prepared after reading each name,” said a Bengal BJP leader. A meeting was held on Thursday evening under the leadership of state vice-presidents Arjun Singh and Pratap Banerjee and campaign in-charge Dinesh Trivedi to discuss the proposals.
According to sources, some names like Roopa Ganguly and Baishali Dalmiya are in the news. Rajya Sabha MP Ganguly was also approached by BJP leaders of the state earlier. “She could not file her nomination last time as her name was not in the Kolkata voter list. Later his name was registered,” said a BJP leader. Ganguly’s tenure as a Rajya Sabha member is set to end by October next year. For a long time, she also led the women’s wing of the BJP in Bengal.
Baishali Dalmiya, a former MLA from Balli, had contested from Balli in the 2021 assembly elections, but lost to Trinamool. The resident of Biren Rai Road, Thakurpukur, Dalmiya has been seen in many political events by the BJP. She is also the co-in-charge of the election campaign committee for KMC.
