'We will not support anyone': Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait on 5 state elections

Rakesh Tikait said that the problems of farmers were discussed in the Chintan Shivir. file

Prayagraj:

Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait has denied reports of RSS supporting any political party ahead of the assembly elections in five states.

Mr. Tikait, who arrived at the Magh Mela to participate in a three-day ‘Chintan Shivir’ of farmers at the Parade Ground, said on Tuesday, “We will not support anyone in this election.”

His statement comes after BKU president Naresh Tikait appealed for support for the Rashtriya Lok Dal-Samajwadi Party alliance in the upcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh. However, hours after his meeting with BJP’s Sanjeev Balyan in Sisauli, the BKU chief withdrew his statement and said he was not supporting anyone.

In the ‘Chintan Shivir’ of the farmers, Rakesh Tikait said, he discussed the problems of the farmers.

Rakesh Tikait said, “In the three-day brainstorming session, issues related to farmers and organization were discussed.”

The BKU leader also expressed his dismay against the government claiming its promises remained unfulfilled.

“During the nationwide farmers’ agitation, the government had promised to form a committee. That has not been done. In the Lakhimpur Kheri incident, many of our people were sent to jail and Minister of State for Home Ajay Kumar Mishra is still in his post. This is a big issue. There are issues of procurement of food grains. These topics were discussed,” Rakesh Tikait said.

He also said that the 13-month “biggest victory” of the farmers’ movement against the (now repealed) three agricultural laws is that political parties “now think of them.”
