We were 10-15 short of competitive scores: SRH captain Kane Williamson

Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Kane Williamson lamented the fact that his team did not have enough runs on the board against Kolkata Knight Riders as they lost by six wickets on Sunday. On the slow Dubai pitch, Williamson opted to bat first but KKR put up SRH at 115/8 with a combined bowling performance.

“Unfortunately we were 10-15 short of competitive scores,” Williamson said during a post-match conversation with broadcasters.

“I think if we get closer to 150, maybe we’ll be equal,” he said.

SRH lost their openers inside the powerplay overs but Williamson then hit a boundary in the sixth over. However, his run out for 26 in the seventh over came as a major setback from which he could never recover.

Abdul Samad and Priyam Garg started and tried to increase the scoring-rate but were unsuccessful in their attempts. Despite a low score to defend, the SRH bowlers did not allow the KKR batsmen to run away from the game.

He picked up two early wickets and kept them calm to chase down the target and take the game into the final over. “We had our chances to squeeze the scoring but with such low scores it was always going to be tough. We have not been able to identify the correct score throughout the season. We need to go back to the drawing board and reevaluate things. We could have built more partnerships,” Williamson said.

SRH are already out of the race for the playoffs but they would like to come out at a higher level. However, Sunday night’s loss was their 10th loss of the season in 12 matches.

They have four points with just two wins so far and will next face Royal Challengers Bangalore on Wednesday.
