We waited 25 years for ‘Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea’, says Mohanlal

Mohanlal continues to rule Malayalam cinema with his unique choice of acting and projects. The ‘Universal Star’ as he is called, his films often get an encouraging response from the audience. His recent film, Marakkar: The Lion of the Arabian Sea released on 2 December and is now available on Amazon Prime Video. It is touted as director Priyadarshan’s most ambitious project. Based on Kunjali Marakkar IV, the film is receiving a thrilling response from the audience.

However, few people know that this great masterpiece had to wait for 25 years to see the light of day.

As reported by Etimes, Mohanlal and director Priyadarshan had planned to make Marakkar after working together on Kalapani in 1996. But at that time, as the actor pointed out, it was not possible to make the film due to various factors. Mohanlal told ETimes, “At that time to make a film like this, we would have to go abroad and film it there, the graphics required and the budget for it was beyond our imagination.”

Both Mohanlal and Priyadarshan had to carry the dream of making a lion of the Arabian Sea by killing them in their hearts for 25 years.

Mohanlal also told the outlet that initially he faced the challenge of making the film in 106 days. And although it was not planned, they managed to achieve an incredible feat. According to the veteran actor, these types of films require a time span of 6 months to a year, but he completed it surprisingly fast.

The magnum opus, which is brilliantly made from time to time, has some breathtaking action and battle scenes. The film tells the story of the legendary Kunjali Markar IV and his epic war against the Portuguese in 16th century Calicut.
