New Delhi: India is celebrating 73rd Republic Day on Wednesday. It was on this day – January 26, 1950 – that India became a republic and the Indian Constitution came into force two months after it was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949.

The Preamble of the Constitution declares India to be a sovereign, socialist, secular and democratic republic whose objective is to ensure justice, liberty, equality and promote fraternity to all citizens.

Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar is considered the father of the Constitution of India.

Here are some interesting facts about the Indian Constitution.

  1. The Constitution of India is the longest constitution in the world.
  2. The Constituent Assembly of India, which was established in 1946, was entrusted with the task of drafting the Constitution for independent India.
  3. Dr Rajendra Prasad, who became the first President of India, was the chairman of the Constituent Assembly, while Ambedkar headed the drafting committee.
  4. The Constituent Assembly took two years, 11 months and 18 days to complete this task as it had 11 sessions. over a period of 165 days,
  5. During the deliberations on the Draft Constitution, a total of 7,635 amendments were introduced, of which 2,473 were introduced, discussed and disposed of by the Constituent Assembly.
  6. The Constitution was adopted on 26 November 1949 and the original document was signed by 284 Members of Parliament.

  8. The Constituent Assembly ceased to exist as soon as the Constitution of India came into force on 26 January 1950. It turned into the Provisional Parliament of India until a new Parliament was formed in 1952.

  10. The original constitution is a handwritten document, one of the longest handwritten documents in the world. The English version has a total of 1,17,369 words.

  12. In the 42nd Amendment Act of 1976, enacted during the Emergency, the word “Socialist” was added to the Preamble. This was the only time that the Preamble has been amended so far.
