Jake Lush Fulcrum, CEO, Rajasthan Royals spoke to News18 CricketNext.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday invited bids for the right to “own and operate” teams in the women’s Indian Premier League (IPL) for the first time. In December, the BCCI also floated tenders for the media rights of the women’s league for the 2023–27 cycle.

Along with the women’s IPL, CEO of Rajasthan Royals Jake Lush Fulcrum has hinted at buying a franchise in the upcoming league. For the first time, the women’s IPL (WIPL) is scheduled to take place in March as the flagship of the men’s IPL. Several teams had shown interest in buying the franchise and Fulcrum’s Rajasthan franchise could be one of them.

“The process is open now, and we have received the tender documents. The bid deadline is January 25. So, we will see,” he told News18 CricketNext.

She said world cricket is witnessing a huge growth in the women’s game and she had sensed its potential a few years back.

“We have invested a huge amount in women’s cricket especially in the last few years. And whatever happens will continue.

“There is some fair economics involved, but we want a team and we have shown that keenness. And it would have been two years back would it have been just us or a few other people who were really keen to take this cause (women’s IPL) forward ..and it’s good to see the growth of the women’s game since then,” she said.

In December, the BCCI also floated tenders for the media rights of the women’s league for the 2023–27 cycle.

“The Governing Council of IPL invites bids from reputed entities for acquiring the right to own and operate a team in the Women’s Indian Premier League through a tender process,” the BCCI said in a statement.

The “(Invitation to Tender) will be available for purchase till January 21, 2023.”

An ESPNcricinfo report in December stated that the inaugural season of the Women’s IPL is likely to be played from March 3-26.

A three-team women’s T20 challenge was staged alongside the men’s IPL since 2018, but the BCCI has been urged to set up an expanded tournament for women with more teams and players.

Australia hosts the Women’s Big Bash League as its domestic T20 league, while New Zealand has the Women’s Super Smash. England hosts ‘The Hundred’ tournament for women as well as the men’s competition.
