Mumbai Indians (MI) suffered their third defeat in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. Despite a promising start in their chase of 215, the five-time champions were trounced by the Punjab Kings at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday night.

Mumbai’s bowlers let Punjab run away from the game in the last five overs of the first innings, adding 96 runs to take their total to 214 for 8. In reply, Mumbai Indians fell 13 runs short despite Cameron. Green (67 off 43 balls), Suryakumar Yadav (57 off 26 balls) and skipper Rohit Sharma (44 off 27 balls) played some classy innings at their home ground.

After the defeat, MI head coach Mark Boucher lamented that the bowlers gave away too many runs at the end of the first innings.

“I thought the game was in the balance. Surya’s wicket was a big wicket, a couple of centimeters up or down and it probably would have gone for a boundary. He kept his cool at the end, so well done to him. We played well. Batted but he (PBKS) scored too many runs which is disappointing because we controlled half the percentage of the game. We let it slip towards the end of our bowling (innings).

“It was good for Surya to get some runs. He always looks great the way he does it. Appearance is a funny thing, sometimes you judge it by the numbers. He is hitting the ball really well in the nets. It is only a matter of time before it converts into runs,” he said.

Boucher said it is frustrating when a team concedes more than 100 runs in the last five overs and that is the reason why Mumbai Indians lost on Saturday night.

He said, ‘Till the 15th over we were in control and then they scored 96 runs in the last five overs. He’s hitting something. We got it wrong, and it’s disappointing because we dominated and when we lost, we lost it incredibly big. We can put our finger on why we lost.
