We are trying many options for next year’s World Cup: Jhulan Goswami

Taunton: The Indian women’s cricket team will try various options during and beyond England’s upcoming series to find out which could be the best possible combination in next year’s Women’s ODI World Cup in New Zealand, Senior Player Jhulan Goswami said.

India’s senior middle-order batsmen like skipper Mithali Raj, Poonam Raut and Deepti Sharma were guilty of wasting 180-odd deliveries in the first ODI, which England won by eight wickets while chasing a modest target of 202.

Goswami did not give a definitive answer on vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s batting status but indicated that a lot of options will be tried ahead of the World Cup in New Zealand next year.

“Okay, we are trying to organize our combination. We are trying to make some choices. Now what options will click for us, we are (still) looking for that. Whatever happens (options that we finalize), the management will take a call before the World Cup,” Goswami said on the eve of the second women’s ODI against England.

“Before the World Cup, we are trying to settle a few things. Hopefully, in the coming matches, in the upcoming series, we will sort out all those things.”

Young Shafali Verma should not be put under excessive pressure of expectation, feels Goswami, who is convinced that it will be a matter of time before the middle-order produces the impact performance expected from her in the ongoing series against England. is.

“Well… it’s just the first match for Shafali. A day before yesterday, she made her ODI debut. We are expecting a lot from her because that’s the impact she has,” Goswami, world in women’s ODIs India’s highest wicket-taker, wants everyone to loosen up when it comes to analyzing a teenager’s performance.

Goswami said of the 180 dot balls consumed, “We just need a good knock from one of the top 3. He will definitely score runs. That’s just what happens in cricket.”

“Every day is a new day, every day is a new learning experience. A good innings from all three. Harman (Kaur) needs a good innings, we know Harman can do that. One from our middle order Need a good innings.”

Jhulan also believes that as a bowling group, they need to step up their game after Tammy Beaumont and Nat Sciver scored a real stick in the opener with them scoring at a strike rate of 100.

“To be honest, we need to come back strongly as a bowling group. We have discussed a lot of things, hopefully we will sort it out and come back strongly. You have to believe in these bowlers, they are your best bowlers, they have potential.

“Both of our medium pacers Shikha Pandey, Pooja Vastrakar and we have two more fast bowlers, all very good cricketers. Shikha is making a comeback from a break.

“Pooja is playing after a long time. He is a quality bowler. They need some time, they will do well. He has single-handedly won matches for India. We just need to give them some time, they will come back strongly. I have a lot of trust in him,” Jhulan signed off.
