‘We all loved him’: Sonia Gandhi calls Oscar Fernandes’ wife Blossom, consoles her

Congress President Sonia Gandhi called up Oscar Fernandes’ wife Blossom Fernandes, who passed away on Monday. Sonia Gandhi tried to pacify Blossom Fernandes who was unable to speak and cried over the loss of her husband. Sonia said that she should preserve beautiful memories of him (Oscar Fernandes).

“Don’t cry too much. You have so many beautiful memories of him. We all loved him. I don’t think there was anyone who disrespected him. Now, you have to be strong for your kids. I’m a few days old.” I will talk to you later. Whatever you decide regarding the funeral is fine with me,” Sonia said over the phone.

Oscar Fernandes and Blossom Fernandes were always seen together and cherished jealous bonds.

Meanwhile, the family has kept the body in the mortuary of Father Muller Hospital in Mangaluru. His mortal remains will be brought to Congress offices in Udupi, Mangaluru and Bengaluru to pay their last respects to his supporters. Family sources said, they will decide on the last rites soon.

Oscar Fernandes was one of the few mass leaders who won the hearts of people divided on communal lines in the coastal Karnataka region. People respected him for his contribution in building highways and infrastructure in the coastal region.

Former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda described him as ‘Ajatshatru’ (a man who has no enemies). “May God rest his soul in peace,” he said.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that Oscar Fernandes’ service to the state and the nation is unparalleled.

He said that former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy explained that Oscar Fernandes saw the Congress party as a mother and loved everyone.

“Shocked by the passing away of senior Congress leader and former minister Oscar Fernandes. My condolences to his family members and may his soul rest in peace,” said Siddaramaiah, opposition leader and former Karnataka chief minister.

Born on March 27, 1941, Oscar Fernandes was a senior Congress leader and Union Cabinet Minister for Transport, Roads and Highways and Labor and Employment in the UPA government.

He was elected to the 7th Lok Sabha in 1980 from the Udupi constituency of Karnataka. He was re-elected to the Lok Sabha in 1984, 1989, 1991 and 1996 from the same constituency. Later, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1998. He was re-elected to the Upper House in 2004.
