After mango, if Indians like the taste of something better in the summer season, then it is watermelon. Watermelon is not only extremely healthy but also an ideal fruit to quench your thirst.

However, did you know that our country grows about 25 commercial varieties of watermelon? Yes, you heard that right. Some of the watermelon cultivating states are Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Orissa, Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, Assam, West Bengal, Karnataka, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. So, let’s take a look at the different varieties of watermelons grown in India:

  1. Watermelon Arka Muthu
    This early ripening melon has less nodal length and usually matures in 75-80 days. This variety of watermelon comes in both oval and round shape and has a dark green striped rind with a deep red color. On an average, watermelon Arka Muthu weighs around 2.5 to 3 kg, with the sugar content ranging from 12 to 14 Brix. The fruit yield of this type of watermelon is 50 to 60 tonnes/ha. Arka Muthu is well suited for precision cultivation and also for high density planting.
  2. Watermelon Arka Akashi
    Watermelon Arka Akash is a high yielding variety that produces oblong melons. This hybrid variety is generally round to oval in shape, has a light green rind with dark green stripes and dark red flesh which usually matures in 90 to 95 days. Its yield ranges from 75 to 80 tonnes/ha. And its sugar content is 12 Brix.
  3. Watermelon Arka Aishwarya
    This type of F1 hybrid watermelon is a high yielding variety and is oblong in shape. Watermelon Arka Aishwarya has a high sugar content which ranges from 12 to 13 brix. Their size is elongated and their flesh is red, with a yield of 80 t/ha.
  4. Watermelon Arka Bead
    Watermelon Arka Manik, weighing 4-6 kg, has a light green rind with dark green stripes and is oval in shape. Its flesh is dark red in color and produces 60 t/ha. Arka ruby ​​also has high sugar content which is between 12 to 15 brix.
