Shubman Gill hits a six to complete his second consecutive century and give Gujarat Titans another win

Ian Bishop’s stirring commentary was the icing on the cake as Shubman Gill put on a breathtaking show at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in the IPL 2023 encounter between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Titans on Sunday night.

Chasing a target of 198 with eight runs needed to win in the last over, Gill scored 98 off 50 balls. Wayne Parnell bowled a waist-high no-ball before hitting a wide yorker, reducing the required six sixes.

Parnell then lofted it into the slot which Gill lofted over long-on for the winning six and also brought up his second consecutive IPL century.

With an unbeaten 104, Gill has now reached the second spot in the race for the Orange Cap. He is now 50 runs away from current skipper Faf du Plessis and going by the GT opener’s form, he can beat South Africa in the first qualifier itself.

Gill admitted that he could not convert his good start in the first half of the season but is happy that it is working for him now.

He said, ‘I am in good form, it is about getting a start and then converting it into big form. I was missing those big matches in the first half of the IPL. I was getting a lot of 40s and 50s. Thankfully, it all worked out for me at the business end of the IPL,” Gill told Ravi Shastri during the post-match presentation.

Gill then went on to reveal what has helped him to turn around now.

He said, ‘You need to keep playing shots in T20 cricket. You have to have the intention and keep applying yourself, keep the belief, that’s more important,” he said.

Gill added 123 runs for the second wicket with all-rounder Vijay Shankar, who came in to bat at No.3.

Although Shankar was not at his best initially, but once he got used to the conditions, he hit a brisk half-century.

He said, ‘When he (Shankar) came, he was trying to hit hard. We had a chat and I told him to maintain his shape and try to time it. Once he picks up the pace, he is someone who can hit the ball a long way,” Gill said.

GT will face Chennai Super Kings in the first qualifier on Tuesday.

It is going to be exciting to play against Chennai in Chennai. We have a great bowling attack especially for that wicket and hopefully we will reach the final for the second time,” Gill said.
