Situated in Saurashtra, Gujarat, the Somnath temple is believed to be the first Jyotirlinga, a devotional representation of the Hindu god Shiva. There are 2 important Hindu religious places around Somnath Temple. There is a Bhalka temple 5 km away from the temple. According to folk tales, this is where Lord Krishna left his body. Just 1 kilometer away from the temple is the Mahasangam (confluence) of three rivers Hiran, Kapila and Saraswati. It is called Triveni. It is believed that the mortal body of Lord Krishna was cremated at this Triveni Sangam. Hence Hindus consider bathing in Triveni as an auspicious event.
The temple is currently in the limelight after Taliban leader Anas Haqqani visited the tomb of the Ottoman ruler Mahmud Ghaznavi in Afghanistan. He referred to Ghaznavi as a “Muslim warrior” who “broke the idol of Somnath”.
