The PM immediately congratulated Bhaker for her historic achievement. He also pointed out one notable feat where she became the first female shooter to claim a medal in the quadrennial event.

The Prime Minister also recalled her heartbreaking moment in the Tokyo 2020 games. Bhaker was unable to make it to the final event then due to a weapon malfunction which resulted in her elimination in the qualifying event.

PM Modi also highlighted how she missed out on the silver medal by just 0.1 points. She was in a closely fought contest with Yeji Kim from South Korea. The 22-year-old Indian shooter was on target with six consecutive shots over 10 points in the final stages of the event but her opponent had a better tally overall, thus resulting her in taking the second position.

The shooter from Haryana also made the shooting enthusiasts proud as she ended their 12-year-long drought of not being able to take home a medal as well.

After her performance, she also became the fifth Indian athlete to win a medal in the Olympics joining some legendary names like RVS Rathore, Abhinav Bindra, Gagan Narang and Vijay Kumar to take the nation’s overall tally in the shooting discipline up to five medals which include one gold, two silvers and two bronzes.

Even before the Paris Games, Bhaker had revealed that they had a chat with the Prime Minister. She was chuffed by the PM taking the time to congratulate her on the medal. She said,” We had this session with him before coming to the Olympics as well…I felt really good that he took out time of his busy schedule. Even after the medal we had a long conversation. He congratulated me. Means a lot to me…Feels good”.

Bhaker’s historic bronze medal brought immense pride to the nation and she hopes that she can continue to keep up her performance in the remaining events she will be taking part in which include the women’s 25m Air Pistol and the mixed 10m Air Pistol events that are slated to take place later on.
