Knight Riders were penalized for exceeding the deadline of completing all 20 overs

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) brought back memories of the IPL 2012 final as they defeated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 6 wickets at Chepauk on Sunday night. Chasing a target of 145, skipper Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh scored half-centuries and shared a 99-run partnership to take Kolkata home in the chase. The win has kept the Knight Riders legitimate in the race for the playoffs while CSK have one more chance left to make it to the knock-outs.

Before KKR defeated Chennai in their den, there was also a moment when the visiting team captain Nitish Rana had a heated exchange with the on-field umpires. The incident happened just before the last over of CSK’s innings. The Knight Riders were penalized for exceeding the time limit of completing all 20 overs. As per the new rules, a team is bound to field a maximum of four fielders outside the circle, instead of five, if they fail to maintain the over-rate.

A video went viral on social media in which Rana can be seen lashing out at the umpires.

The KKR skipper finally found his cool as Arora bowled a brilliant final over, conceding just 9 runs and taking the wicket of Ravindra Jadeja.

Chasing 145, Rana remained unbeaten on 57 off 44 balls while Rinku made 54 off 43 balls to rescue KKR from a precarious position where they were bowled out for 33 within the powerplay. KKR were 147 for four in 18.3 overs, with Rana leading the way after taking advantage of the opportunity.

KKR’s cause was helped to a great extent by a brilliant bowling effort by the spin duo of Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine, who put in a stellar performance and picked up two wickets each. The defeat also ended CSK’s chances of securing a place in the playoffs as the home side are second with 15 points.

KKR, on the other hand, are on 12 points with one match to play but will pin their hopes on other results.
