Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murty received cheers and applause from 10 Downing Street staff as they left the official residence of the UK PM.

A video released by 10 Downing Street on Friday showed former UK PM Rishi Sunak being cheered and applauded as he leaves the official residence of the UK Prime Minister following the Conservative Party’s biggest-ever electoral defeat.

UK Labour won 412 seats in the House of Commons with only one result left to declare, giving it a majority of 174. Rishi Sunak’s Tories won just 121 seats — a record low.

Sunak said he would also step down as party leader following poor electoral performance. However, his staff gave him a raucous farewell before he headed to Buckingham Palace to hand in his resignation to King Charles III.

“To the country, I would like to say first and foremost, I am sorry,” he said outside the Prime Minister’s residence at Downing Street, before heading to Buckingham Palace to tender his resignation as prime minister to King Charles III.

“I have given this job my all, but you have sent a clear signal that the government of the United Kingdom must change. And yours is the only judgement that matters,” Sunak said.

“I have heard your anger, your disappointment, and I take responsibility for this loss,” he further added.
