A Boeing cargo plane operated by Atlas Air was compelled to make an emergency landing at Miami International Airport after experiencing an engine malfunction shortly after takeoff. The incident, involving a Boeing 747-8, was reported on Thursday, with videos circulating on the X social media platform showing flames emerging from the left wing during the flight.

In a statement, Atlas Air confirmed that the flight crew followed standard procedures and safely returned to Miami International Airport. The company stated its intention to conduct a thorough inspection to determine the cause of the engine malfunction. The identified aircraft, a Boeing 747-8, is equipped with four General Electric GEnx engines. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to the situation, and fortunately, no injuries were reported.

As of the report, requests for comments from Boeing, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and General Electric had not been answered. Against a backdrop of existing challenges for Boeing, this incident adds to the company’s woes, especially in the aftermath of a recent crisis involving an Alaska Airlines MAX 9 airliner. The MAX 9 was forced to make an emergency landing when a section of its fuselage detached shortly after taking off from Portland, Oregon, on January 5. This unsettling event prompted the FAA to issue a temporary grounding of 171 aircraft for safety inspections.
