‘Wanted to do special training, enrolled myself in a club’: Gavaskar reveals Dinesh Karthik’s hard work

Indian cricket fans recently witnessed the surprise return of Dinesh Karthik in Indian colours. The veteran wicketkeeper-batsman stole the show in Rajkot with a blistering 21-ball 55, his maiden half-century in the shortest format in 16 years.

Meanwhile, batting great Sunil Gavaskar revealed Karthik’s hard work to make a comeback in Indian dressing. Talking with Star Sports, the former India The captain recalled India’s tour of the UK in 2021 when they were both on commentary duty.

Gavaskar shared the events of the tour, describing how Karthik “put in a tough yard” to make a comeback in the national team.

“When we (he and Dinesh Karthik) went for the World Test Championship we were having lunch, breakfast, dinner together. And there he was telling me about his ambition to be back in the India team for the T20 World Cup,” Gavaskar said during an interaction on Star Sports.

“He didn’t line up for one in the UAE, but this time he looks great to be part of the flight to Melbourne,” he said.

Gavaskar further explained the nature of Kartik’s training which included taking into account various situations and chasing them accordingly.

“He was telling me how he was creating a situation in his mind and practicing accordingly. So, it was not just mindless exercise, it was thoughtful practice. The exercises were done according to what the situation might be like when he is there, said the former cricketer.

The cricketer-turned-commentator also revealed that Karthik enrolled himself in a better facility to continue his ‘special training’.

“He was also training so he dropped out of the hotel gym because it was not good enough. He wanted to do some special training. He went and enrolled himself in a club.

“It tells you about the dedication and eagerness to be back in the Indian team. And the way he is playing now, he will only admire you. You have worked hard and this is the reward,” concluded Gavaskar.
