Walls of JNU Campus Defaced with Anti-Brahmin Slogans; VC Condemns Vandalism, Calls for Strict Action

Parts of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus in Delhi were defaced with slogans against the Brahmin and Bania communities. The students alleged that the walls of the School of International Studies-II building were razed.

The JNU administration took note of the situation and condemned the act of vandalism. “Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Santashree D. Pandit has taken a serious note of the incident of defacement of walls and faculty rooms by some unknown elements at SIS, JNU. The administration condemns these exclusionary tendencies in the campus. Such incidents will not be tolerated as JNU belongs to all.

According to the administration’s statement, the Dean of the School of International Studies and the Complaints Committee have also been asked to conduct an inquiry at the earliest and submit a report to the VC.

Some pictures shared on social media showed slogans written on the walls – “Quit the Brahmin complex”, “There will be blood”, “Brahmin Quit India” and “Brahmin-baniya, we are coming for you! We Will take revenge” “

Hours after the incident, JNU in its statement said that the university stands for inclusion and equality and the VC reiterates zero tolerance for any kind of violence on campus.

The RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad or ABVP accused the Left of bidding the vandalism.

“ABVP condemns the large scale vandalism of academic places by communist goons. Communists have written abuses on the walls of JNU’s School of International Studies-II building. ABVP JNU President Rohit Kumar said they defaced the chambers of free-thinking professors to intimidate them.

“We believe that academic spaces should be used for debate and discussion and not for poisoning the society and the community of students,” Kumar said.

The JNU teachers’ body also condemned the vandalism incident by posting a tweet, accusing a “left-liberal gang” of vandalizing the campus.

“While the Left-Liberal gang intimidates every dissenting voice, they appeal to the Election Commission to elect representatives who can ‘inculcate the values of mutual respect and decency, and treat everyone equally and fairly. ‘ ‘Civilization’ and ‘mutual respect.’ Highly condemnable act of vandalism!” tweeted the JNU Teachers’ Forum.
