In the dismissal order issued on Saturday, the VMC’s standing committee said Patel’s conduct and his arrest by the ACB “affected the image of the VMC” and “it was unfair for a government servant to accept and accept bribes”.

ACB caught Patel red-handed taking bribe and filed a charge sheet in the case. Patel’s arrest came a month after he, along with two other officials, were suspended in June 2019 for a dispute over the Nimeta water filtration plant, which had not been serviced for more than a decade, leading to various parts of the city. The VMC approved the prosecution of the officer on October 25, 2019, and subsequently initiated a departmental inquiry in November 2019. On August 5 this year, the Municipal Commissioner presented the report of the charge sheet of the departmental inquiry. The motion for Patel’s dismissal states that the charges leveled against him were found to be true in a departmental inquiry. Therefore, under the relevant provisions of the Gujarat Civil Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1971 as well as the Gujarat Provincial Municipal Corporation Act, 1949, the Standing Committee has resolved to dismiss Patel from service, it said.
