A land parcel of over three acres belonging to VK Sasikala, located in nearby Payyanur village, was temporarily confiscated by Income Tax officials under the Prohibition of Benami Property Transactions Act on Wednesday. Sasikala, a former key aide of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, was barred from transferring the property as per the provisions of the BPTA.
He was kicked out of the AIADMK years ago after being imprisoned in a Bengaluru jail in 2017 after being convicted in a disproportionate assets case. The Payyanur complex reportedly also includes a bungalow and the total assets are worth crores of rupees. The property of 3 acres and 52 cents, purchased in 1994, was attached under section 24(3) of the Act, which outlines the process.
It states, “Where the Initiating Officer is of the opinion that a person possessing benami property may alienate the property during the period specified in the notice, he may, with the prior approval of the Approving Authority, by order in writing, for a period not exceeding ninety days. to attach the property provisionally in such manner as may be prescribed.”
Noting that a show cause notice has already been issued to him in respect of the property, the provisional attachment order states that the Authority is of the opinion that the property can be detached and therefore “temporarily attached considered expedient and necessary,” under the Act. It has faced similar action with respect to other properties in recent years.
