Story – Today (January 12) is the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. There is a story related to them. The incident is from the time when he was known as Narendranath, not Swami Vivekananda.

When Narendranath used to leave his house for some religious work, he had to pass through a locality where prostitutes lived. When prostitutes used to do their activities on the street outside the house, young Narendranath was very ashamed. Because of this, he stopped passing through that path. Now they used to reach their destination through a very long road.

After a few days when he became famous as Vivekananda, there was a question of more prestige, because of this he could not pass through that locality, but one day suddenly thought came in his mind that why I did not pass through that locality Can. Now there should be no discrimination in my mind for any woman.

Swamiji thought that in fact, I have an attraction somewhere in my mind for the activities of prostitutes. My lust drives my mind towards that attraction. There is nothing wrong with the locality, it is about my sense of attraction. I must end this attraction. After this there will be no difference in my mind for anyone. I can go anywhere.

After this thought, Swamiji started passing through that locality. All the prostitutes would see Swamiji, but in the presence of Swamiji the prostitutes would bow down and become modest. Gradually Swamiji stopped feeling that this is a neighborhood of prostitutes. All kinds of discrimination ended from his mind.

Lessons – Swamiji has taught us that we have to do penance, we have to keep discipline. Only the bad thoughts of our mind show us more evil outside. If we are in control then even the bad things outside cannot affect us.
