New Delhi: Punjab Government appointed IAS officer on Saturday Viresh Kumar Bhawra As the new DGP of the state amid the controversy over a “big lapse in security” during the Prime Minister Narendra ModiPunjab tour.

“On the consideration of the panel received from the Union Public Service Commission, the Governor of Punjab appoints Viresh Kumar Bhawra, IPS, as the Director General of Police, Punjab (Chief of the Police Force). His tenure will be for a minimum period of time. Two years from the date of assumption of charge in pursuance of the orders dated 3rd July, 2018,” the Punjab government said in its order.
The Central government on Thursday constituted a three-member committee headed by Sudhir Kumar Saxena, Secretary (Security) of the Cabinet Secretariat, comprising Intelligence Bureau Joint Director Balbir Singh and Special Security Group IG S Suresh. Examine the “big security lapse” during Modi’s Punjab visit.
After being stranded on the flyover by protesters due to the blockade, the prime minister had to return from the election state without attending any event, including a rally.
Chief Minister of Punjab Charanjit Singh Channi denied that there was any security lapse or political motive behind it and said his government was open to an investigation.
The Punjab government has also constituted a committee on Wednesday to probe the incident.
