Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag was counted among the most dangerous batsmen in world cricket in his heyday. Before earning his reputation as a swashbuckler, Sehwag was also frequently targeted by opposition players hoping to intimidate him by sledging. One such incident occurred in the summer of 1999, when Sehwag made his One Day International (ODI) debut for India against bitter rivals Pakistan in Mohali. Batting at number seven, Sehwag was able to score just one run off just two balls before legendary Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar trapped him in front of the wickets.
This was the sixth match in the Pepsi Cup and the last match of the group stage. Only three teams – India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka – were playing in the tournament. Pakistan were on top when Sehwag walked in to bat as he sent back India’s top five for just 145 runs in 39.3 overs. After Sourav Ganguly’s departure, when he went to bat, the Pakistani cricketers welcomed him with some colorful words.
“I was around 20-21 years old then. When I went to bat, Shahid Afridi, Shoaib, Yusuf and all other Pakistani team members greeted me with abusive words.
The ace cricketer also claimed that he did not even know the meaning of some of the words that his opponents used when they came to the crease. He further revealed that he didn’t say much in response as it was his first and he was “nervous”.

Meanwhile, Pakistan defeated India by seven wickets in the Mohali ODI. Teens met in the Pepsi Cup final as well and the Men in Green took home the trophy as they beat their neighbors by 123 runs in the summit clash.
