Irfan Pathan praised Shubman Gill and said that he has full potential to become an all-format player like Virat Kohli.

East India All-rounder Irfan Pathan heaped praise on young Shubman Gill and claimed that he has the batting ability of Virat Kohli. Gill has been in tremendous form in the last one year across formats. The talented batsman has scored centuries in all three formats in the last six months, including a double hundred in ODIs against New Zealand last month.

The 23-year-old continued his impeccable form with a brilliant T20I century in the series decider against New Zealand on Wednesday to help India win the series 2-1. Shubman played an inning of 126 runs* Virat Kohli For posting the highest score by an Indian in T20Is.

Pathan spoke highly of Gill and said that he has all the potential to become an all-format player like Kohli.

I am a big fan of the way he is batting. I have been saying time and again that he can become an all-format player for you. Virat Kohli ruled all formats for many years, that’s the ability of this batsman. Converting it into performance is a different thing,” Pathan said on Star Sports.

Shubman has emerged as one of the most consistent performers with the bat in the last year as all his international centuries have come in the last six months and the team management has also backed him well to get enough chances in all three formats.

“It happens with time but Shubman Gill has started doing that. He scored his first century in August. Gill has now scored a total of six centuries in international cricket and we have just started February where all other players have scored just four international hundreds,” Pathan said.

The former all-rounder further explained that Shubman has a wide range of shots which helps him score at a healthy rate in the shortest format.

“He is improving his game. The challenge before Shubman Gill in T20 cricket was whether he could improve his strike rate once he was set – we certainly saw that. Today we saw brilliant shots – upwards , against pull shots and spin. He has no problem against pace, which we saw again today. Apart from playing pull shots, he also hit big shots straight down the ground against fast bowlers and we also saw a mini-helicopter, Pathan said.
