Tokyo Olympic Qualification

In 2020, Vinesh Phogat became the first Indian wrestler to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, as she defeated World No. 1 Sarah Ann Hildebrandt 8-2. His scintillating and excellent defensive skills have always been a sight to behold and he never let his opposition take control. Phogat, who was drawn into a challenging 53kg draw, won her first repechage by defeating Yulia Khvaldzhi Blahinya of Ukraine 5-0.

On June 11, Vinesh Phogat won a gold medal in the 53KG division at the Poland Open which has given the Indian wrestler the much-needed preparation ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. Phogat defeated Ukraine’s Ekaterina Poleshchuk 8-0 in the final to win the final of the Poland Open. Phogat also won the gold medal in March by winning the Matteo Pelicone event. After her victory, Phogat jumped 14 points to become the world’s No. 1 wrestler.
