Vinesh Phogat CAS Verdict LIVE Updates: Indian Wrestler Back In India as IOA Remains Hopeful of Favourable Verdict – News18

Vinesh Phogat CAS Verdict LIVE Updates:

Having been denied a shot at winning an Olympic medal after being disqualified for failing the weigh-in, India wrestler Vinesh Phogat has knocked on the doors of Court for of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Vinesh was set to create history by becoming the first ever females wrestler from India to contest for gold medal but on the day of her bout, her weight was found to be 100gm more than the limit and consequently, she was disqualified from the entire event meaning she won’t even get the guaranteed silver medal.

The stunning turn of events saw Indian government getting involved with the country’s sports minister revealing their national Olympic committee has lodged a strong protest with the United World Wrestling over the decision.

A heartbroken Vinesh announced her retirement from wrestling a day after her disqualification but she has turned to CAS in hopes of being awarded a joint-silver medal.

As per reports, CAS granted the Indian contingent until 9:30 PM IST on Thursday to finalise their legal representation. The Indian camp acquired the services of Harish Salve for the case and made their appeal in court.

After multiple postponements, the IOA released a statement about the possible release of the verdict.

“The ad-hoc division of CAS has extended time for the Sole Arbitrator Hon. Dr Annabelle Bennett in the Vinesh Phogat vs. United World Wrestling & the International Olympic Committee matter to give a decision till 6-00 p.m. on August 13, 2024,” the IOA statement read.
